Oh no wordle has gone offline and judging by the message it might not be back for a while. Let’s hope that it can sort out what seems to be some legal trouble as so many teachers use it and list it as one of the favourite sites. As much as I hope it comes back, fear not there are many alternatives out there. The ones I have used are:
Wordsift, which actually does much more than wordle (but is not as colourful. It is aimed at managing “the demands of vocabulary and academic language in their text materials”. When you enter a text it makes a tag cloud (a bit similar to wordle) but it is based on the frequent words so enter a whole text and it gives you the top 50 used words. It also allows to search, make minds maps, find definitions and so much more.
One I came across recently and seem very similar to wordle is word cloud which is part of the ABCYa website . It works the same way, drop in the text and press the arrow. Here is a cloud made using the wordle down notice.
Tagul, allows you to make different shapes of your words and is slightly more complicated to use. There is an easy to follow tutorial made by @ShellTerrell on youtube.
There are a number of blog posts about alternatives so if you want to know more, I suggest you start with Marisa’s excellent comparison posting
So there are a few alternatives, but am not sure any of them have the same attachment for teachers, so wordle hurry back please.
